On Aug. 31, 2002, the Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia, community lost a great friend — Robert “Rusty” Coffman Jr.

Rusty was the epitome of a southern gentleman, the consummate family man and a loving husband. He was hardworking with a vibrant smile and classic sense of humor. He was dedicated to the Smith Mountain Lake community and a die-hard Virginia Tech fan. Rusty’s tenaciousness on the golf course made him a favorite of many golf foursomes.

Those who knew Rusty well have drawn inspiration from his life and the brave battle he fought against renal cell (kidney) cancer. In recognition and celebration of his many gifts, we organized the first Rusty Coffman Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit:

More than 120 people helped raise $12,000 at the first Rusty Coffman Memorial Golf Tournament on Aug. 25, 2003.

In May 2004, we began sales of the Cancer Awareness Bracelet to raise additional funds for Cancer Treatment Research Foundation. We've donated a total of $56,000.

Coming down the stretch of a golf match, Rusty was famous for saying, “Let’s finish strong!”  With your help, we hope to finish strong in beating cancer.
