Wesley Underwood was awarded the 2006 Rusty Coffman Memorial Scholarship at graduation ceremonies in June at Narrows High School. The $3,000 scholarship was the largest award presented that evening.
The scholarship honors the late Robert “Rusty” Coffman Jr., a Giles County native and graduate of Narrows High School, who died in 2002 of renal cell cancer at the age of 41. Proceeds were funded by the annual Rusty Coffman Memorial Golf Tournament.
Wesley plans to attend Roanoke College in the fall. He wrote the following thank you note to Brenda Coffman and the selection committee:

Dear Ms. Coffman,
I'd like to sincerely thank you for sponsoring the Rusty Coffman Memorial Scholarship again this year. I worked extremely hard applying for many scholarships and was lucky to have been awarded several of them. But I must admit I accept this one with mixed emotions. Mom and Dad tell me of how they went to church with Rusty for years when they were all teenagers and of how he used to pick at me at church when I was a short, chubby, curly-headed little guy. It is very sad to think why this scholarship was created, but please know how grateful my parents and I are for it and the difference it will make on my college tuition as with the past years' recipients. Please know how sorry we are for your loss but also that Rusty's memory will live on in all who knew him!
Sincerely and many thanks,
Wesley Underwood
